Australia - Aged Parent Visa

804 - Aged Parent visa

The Aged Parent visa allows Australian resident children to sponsor their overseas parents for permanent residency in Australia. This visa has the same requirements as the Parent visa except you must be over 65 years for a male or between 60-65 for a female - depending on date of birth. Then you can make an onshore application here in Australia and will be granted a bridging visa allowing you stay until your Aged Parent Visa is granted.

There is no points test for this visa.

Main Criteria

The main criteria for a Aged Parent visa are;

  1. You must meet the age criteria
  2. You must meet the Balance of Family test whereby the majority of your children must be lawfully and permanently resident in Australia.
  3. You must be the parent of a child who is a settled Australian citizen or settled permanent resident and who will sponsor your application;
  4. Your sponsor must be approved (their application is lodged at the same time as yours);
  5. You and your partner must both meet health, public interest, special return and character requirements.
  6. You will also be required to provide an Assurance of Support (mandatory) which is a legal agreement made by your assurer to financially assist you if necessary, to ensure that costs to Australia are minimised. Your assurer agrees to repay any social security payments claimed by the you. Generally the Assurance of Support is provided by a family member or friend living in Australia, providing they can show sufficient taxable income in Australia to meet the requirements to be approved as an assurer. It is possible for up to 3 people to lodge a joint AoS and the income of each person is counted towards the required minimum. Assurances of Support can also be given by corporations or unincorporated bodies. The assurer puts up a bond of $3,500 for the main applicant and an additional $1,500 for each adult included in the application which is held by the Government for 2 years and then refunded with interest less any deductions against claims.
  7. You will be required to pay the Visa Application Charge(s), see below under Dept. of Immigration costs.

Department of Immigration Costs for an Aged Parent Visa

The example costs below include a primary applicant (you) and a secondary applicant (your partner). These costs are an estimate only and should be confirmed with OCS-Consultants.

  1. Initial application fee which is made when you lodge your application: $1,990
  2. Second instalment which is made just before the decision to grant: $1,165 per adult applicant (1165 x 2 = $2,330)
  3. Also a security bond (the Assurance of Support) must be deposited just before the visa grant. The assurance of support bond is $3,500 for the first parent and $1,500 for each additional applicant aged over 18. The bond is held for a period of 2 years. So $3,500 + $1,500 = $5,000 for both of you.
  4. Plus costs for medical and character checks (estimated $300 per person).

Total DIAC costs for an Aged Parent visa for 2 adults is $1990 + $2330 + $5,000 bond + $600 health & character = AU$9,920
